মোহিনের ঘোড়াগুলি (Mohiner Ghoraguli) – a band whose name came out directly from Jibananda Das’s (a Bengali poet of Caliber who is very often compared with Keats because of his sensuousness) poem Horses (ঘোড়া).

Like a moonlit horizon their career was always hazy and the spirit of these mighty riders became prominent only after the Jibonmukhi movement and advent of singers like Suman, Anjan and Nachiketa. In 1995 Kolkata book fair their album, Abar Bochor Kuri Por, became a great hit. Soon the Bangla Bands became a phenomenon and the brought the aspect of mass participation to Bangla music. Mohiner Ghoraguli and their talents were recognized and became popular.

Pursuing their dreams to create a totally different genre, Mohiner Ghoraguli came up with several songs whose lyrics and tunes hardly had any meaning to the people of Bengal who were enamored with the melodies of the filmy tracks. They were unknown in their own time may be because of their lyrics or tune. This was hey day of superfluous Bengali music which had soothing melody and simple lyrics. Melodiousness had almost always been the deciding factor for Bengali songs to be good or bad. To categorize Mohiner Ghoraguli in a genre would be a futile task. They used a mix of বাউল (baul – a genre of Sufi folk song in Bengal) and rock – a weird combination which showed the way for the future Bengali songs. Their songs are close to urban folk movement and Bob Dylan.

Goutam Chottopadhay, Pradip Chottopadhay, Biwanath Chottopadhay, Ranjon Ghoshal, Abraham Mazumder, Tapas Das, Tapesh Bandopadhyay, Raja Bandopadhyay were the Band members. Each member was equally talented with various musical instruments. They recorded with western instruments and have three albums – Jhora Somayer Gaan, Khapar Gaan and Maya. For six years (1976 – 1981) they performed 15 to 16 shows in Kolkata. Their music was heard in Rabindra Sadan, Maxmuller Bhaban, St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission ground and many other places. They were also unique on the stage. The decorations of the stage were totally different and so were the tickets. Sometimes the tickets were just like a telegram and at times the tickets came with finger prints of the band members. Introducing their music as Baul-Jazz Mohiner Ghoraguli was able to compliment electric guitars, saxophone, drums with Dotara (instrument used by the bauls of Bengal), country flute and violin. Their music had everything to shake self-content Bengali culture. But like everything else, Bengalis were happy with the same soothing tones of the soloists, Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geeti. No body wanted to listen to these songs and Mohin’s horses had to run different paths in search of livelihood. It took 20 years for Bengali audience to get out of this inertia.

This band knew that they live in a city which has no contemporary music. The music that is popular is no more than a mellowed continuation of the canon. Thus, Mohiner Ghoraguli wanted to come up with songs which speak of pangs, problems and happiness of their generation. Their music was more of a protest against the tradition, against superfluous lyricism and against all the sentinels of Bengali high culture. To the Bengali decedents of Metternich, Bengali high culture is now groveling on the ground. This is an age where anybody can change the tune of Rabindra sangeet or publish Rabindranath’s or SaratChandra’s timeless works – an age when Rabindranath’s noble prize is dangling from the neck of a local thief. Now is the best time for the riders to ride again and ride to win hearts. Their songs like Prithibita naki choto hote hote, dhandar thekeo jatil tumi, parasanai jalan jail diye, telephone and many such songs have become popular amongst the Bengali youth of today. These songs very often talk of stark reality with a tune of urban folk songs. These songs are equally accepted now by the urban youth and rural masses. Let the elites of Bengal lament. Bengali music is no more the same – it has become all inclusive. All hail to Mohin’s Cavalry charge.
