On the expansive African plains a giant snake waits, motionless. A small herd of African antelopes – impala feed in the lush grasses along a riverbank. The scene is tense and still, and as we move in close, our view is in slow motion so that we become hyper aware. The antelope chewing sounds are loud and distorted. Flies buzz, and tawny hide twitches alighting the swarm. Suddenly our view shifts to a low angle, thermal image. Something is keening on a juvenile impala as it feeds, moving ever closer. The impala seems unaware and continues grazing, its warm body glowing red like a beacon as it moves about the grass picking away at the cool, tender shoots. Tension is palpable as we see tiny hooves criss-cross painfully close to the highly camouflaged, coiled snake. The snake’s body swells as if mustering all of its power and energy. In one, swift movement the python has its grip around the impala’s torso. Startled, the rest of the herd bolts as the young animal is unmercifully dragged down. It struggles, nostrils flaring with each breath stolen. The python secures its grip. We crash zoom inside the impala’s circulatory system to experience the horrors granted the victim of constriction. As the impala strains to take a breath the python tightens its death grip. The blood flow slows. The heart stops. But then, surprisingly, something unexpected — a horrific sound of shattering bone and in an x-ray we see the snake shatter the impala’s vertebrae and sever the spinal cord. The impala’s legs go limp. Its fate is sealed. This is just the start of a journey, which will take Dr Jesús Rivas across the world and many continents from Venezuela to Australia to discover the different species of ‘constrictors’ from anacondas, pythons to boas.
